Description
Crispy, flaky, and loaded with scallions, this recipe for green onion cakes is inspired by classic Edmonton street food. Easy to prep, freeze, and pan-fry to perfection!
Ingredients
1. 4 cups all-purpose flour
2. 1 tsp baking powder
3. 1/4 tsp baking soda
4. 1/2 tsp salt
5. 1 1/2 cups warm water
6. 1/4 cup butter
7. 1/4 cup canola oil (plus extra for frying)
8. 1 tsp sesame oil
9. 2–3 bunches green onions, roughly chopped
10. 1–2 tsp salt (for sprinkling on filling)
Instructions
1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add warm water and mix until dough forms. Knead until soft and smooth. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
2. In a small skillet, melt butter, canola oil, and sesame oil together.
3. Roll dough into a thin oval. Brush generously with oil mixture. Sprinkle evenly with green onions and salt.
4. Roll dough into a log. Cut into 8 pieces. Pinch ends shut and twist slightly. Flatten into discs.
5. Roll each disc between parchment sheets until thin.
6. To cook, heat oil in a skillet over medium-high. Fry cakes for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
7. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
1. Freeze uncooked cakes between parchment. Cook from frozen—no thawing needed. 2. Great served as appetizers, snacks, or side dishes.
