For Lynn, it started in the hallways of her childhood apartment building. Growing up in a multicultural Toronto neighborhood meant being surrounded by an incredible tapestry of global flavors. The air was always thick with something delicious—one day, it was the spicy, smoky aroma of her neighbor’s jerk chicken, and the next, it was the fragrant, creamy scent of her best friend’s mom stirring a pot of butter chicken. Those shared kitchens became her first school, sparking a lifelong curiosity for how food brings people together.

For Helena, the magic happened in one specific kitchen: her grandmother’s. It was a place where classic recipes were passed down through stories and hands-on lessons, where the scent of baking bread was a constant, and where every meal felt like an act of love. She learned the patience of letting a stew simmer for hours and the simple joy of mastering a family recipe until it was just right. Her passion grew from a love for tradition and the comforting power of a home-cooked meal.

Neither of us went to a fancy culinary school. Our education has come from years of learning from the most patient and generous teachers we could have asked for: grandmothers who measured with their hearts, quirky uncles with secret family recipes, and enthusiastic friends who weren’t afraid to experiment and mess things up.

Our kitchens have been laboratories of trial and error. They have seen their fair share of flops—Lynn still talks about her disastrous attempt at making croissants during a sweltering July heatwave and the infamous beet risotto that ended up looking (and feeling) like purple glue. Every misstep and every burnt dish has taught us something valuable and deepened our passion for the process. Those mistakes are a reminder that cooking is an adventure, and perfection is never the goal.
